MR. DUKAKIS' NO. 2 MAN.(Main)(Editorial)

By choosing Texas Sen. Lloyd Bentsen as his running mate, Democrat Michael Dukakis solves a problem facing his 1988 presidential ticket: Geographic balance. Yet the Massachusetts governor may now have another problem on his hands: How to soothe supporters of Jesse Jackson, who may feel disenfranchised by the Democratic Party.

Although he won't be nominated until Democrats meet next week in Atlanta, Mr. Dukakis is already under attack from his Republican opponent, Vice President George Bush, as a Harvard Yard, Northeast liberal. Mr. Dukakis has now answered that charge by selecting a Southwestern conservative with a long record of national experience.
