GRAND UNION STORES TO CLOSE.(MAIN)

A number of Capital Region Grand Union stores -- which a new owner had said would continue to operate under the Grand Union name -- will instead close.

Ten stores -- including Grand Union sites in Clifton Park, Niskayuna and East Greenbush -- are slated to begin liquidation sales as soon as Grand Union Co.'s assets are purchased next month by C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc. of Brattleboro, Vt., said Grand Union officials.

Two other Capital Region Grand Union stores, not included in the C&S deal, closed last month.

C&S is due to purchase 13 other area stores from Grand Union, which the wholesaler has said it will operate because they have not yet drawn interest from a third-party buyer. But some industry experts suspect those …
