Fed: Green groups at odds over decision to reject ETS
Green groups are at odds over the Senate's decision to vote down the federal government's
planned emissions trading scheme.
The Climate Institute .. a supporter of Labor's carbon pollution reduction scheme ..
describes the vote as a tragic postponement.
But Friends of the Earth says parliamentary approval of the scheme would have locked
us into a high-polluting economy.
The World Wildlife Fund says parliament's inability to deliver an emissions trading
scheme threatens a global agreement on climate action .. while opinion polls show most
Australians want leadership on climate change.
And Dr FRANK JOTZO .. from the Climate Change Institute at the Australian National
University .. says while the government's scheme has flaws .. he's hoping it'll be improved
rather than watered down before the Senate votes again.
The government has to wait three months before it can reintroduce the legislation to parliament.
